Welcome to Hillston Farm

our Karoo Farmstay

We invite you to experience true escape at Hillston Farm, a place of quiet beauty and glorious views. Experience genuine, warm Karoo hospitality with a difference.

Hillston Farm is an AA Highly Recommended Karoo Farmstay providing accommodation in our 3 establishments, namely, our quaint ironstone Hillston Cottage, built in the late 1800’s, our remote Northmead Country House or at our new Hopewell Farmstay, 27km down the road.

All our establishments are fully equipped for self-catering and have braai facilities. We offer meals on request for Hillston Cottage and Northmead Country House. Hopewell Farmstay is fully self-catering.

At Hillston, we are passionate about food. Almost every memorable occasion involves food, and we spend hours planning and preparing the perfect menu. For us, every meal we serve is an opportunity to show you just how superb food in the Karoo can be!

Hillston also offers catering for bus tour groups. The kitchen caters for up to 30 people. Contact us for rates and dates.

You can enjoy an historical tour of the Boer War blockhouse (now a braai lapa) and barracks which have been converted into a shearing shed. Explore the river in search of fossils or the koppies for bushman etchings.

Hillston Farm is the perfect place to count shooting stars. Come see the rings around Saturn with our telescope. We also have more than a hundred birds to tick off your list, including the rare blue korhaan, and scenery to inspire any photographer or painter.

So come… waken at daybreak to witness a spectacular Karoo sunrise and experience the farm coming to life, or sleep in and catch up on some rest you have only been able to dream about…

Fresh air, amazing stars at night, silence except for the sound of farm animals and true farmer hospitality. And then the food..homemade sausages and jam, organic farm eggs and freshly baked bread. We even received "padkos" and farm fruit when we left!

I sleep over evertime I pass through Middelburg. It is a fantastic farm experiece. Fresh air, open skies and the smell of Karoo veld. It does not get better than that!

"There is something magical about the vast semi-desert region known simply as the Karoo. Despite its frequent droughts and extremes of climate, the Karoo nurtures life in great abundance and its plains teem with animals of every description.

After the seasonal rains the recovery of the veld is miraculous: frogs chorus in full throat and a carpet of brilliant flowers spreads dramatically over the once barren wasteland.

To the passing motorist who has been driving in the heat for hour upon hour, its desolation and aridity seem harsh indeed. But to those who have been captivated by its fierce beauty, the Karoo is a place unlike any other.¦ Once it has courted you and won you, there is really no other life."
